Gasteria is a genus of slow-growing, low-maintenance succulent plants native to South Africa, closely related to Aloe and Haworthia. Known for their thick, warty, tongue-shaped leaves in shades of green with white markings, these plants are excellent houseplants due to their preference for bright indirect light and infrequent watering.

Key Details About Gasteria:

  • Appearance: They can have rough, bumpy, or smooth leaves arranged in two ranks (distichous) or spirals, often with bright orange or pinkish tubular flowers.
  • Light & Temperature: They thrive in bright, indirect light but tolerate low light, making them perfect indoors. Ideal temperatures are between 65°F to 80°F (
  • Watering & Soil: As drought-tolerant plants, they need well-draining soil (e.g., succulent mix) and should be watered only when the soil is completely dry.
  • Propagation: Gasteria readily produces offsets (pups) at the base, which can be separated and repotted.
  • Common Name: Often referred to as "warty," "ox tongue," or "cow's tongue" due to the texture and shape of the leaves

Common Species & Varieties:

  • Gasteria bicolor (formerly Gasteria maculata)
  • Gasteria armstrongii
  • Gasteria "Green Ice"
  • Gasteria carinata
  • Gasteria minima
  • Native Habitat: Originating from South Africa, these plants are known for their resilience in various climates.
  • Appearance: They feature thick, fleshy leaves arranged in rosettes, often with distinctive white spots or bumps.
  • Care: Gasteria plants thrive in bright, indirect light and require sparse watering, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
