A red apparent cactus, often known as a red moon cactus (Gymnocalycium mihanovichii), is a small, grafted succulent defined by its vibrant, chlorophyll-deficient, ruby-red top sitting on a green rootstock. These popular houseplants typically grow 3–5 inches tall, require bright indirect light, and need little water. 

• Appearance: The top portion is spherical, colorful, and may have wrinkled ribs, appearing red, magenta, or bright orange due to lack of chlorophyll.
• Grafted Structure: Because the top is a mutant that cannot produce its own energy, it is grafted onto a separate green cactus base that provides necessary nutrients.
• Flowers: When they bloom, they produce pale green to brownish-yellow flowers, not red, which is a common misconception.
• Care Requirements:
