Pincushion cacti (Mammillaria species) are small, spherical to cylindrical, low-maintenance cacti originating from arid regions in Mexico and the U.S. They are characterized by tubercles rather than ribs, dense spines, and a crown of vibrant, funnel-shaped flowers. They thrive in bright, direct sun and well-drained soil, making them popular houseplants.
Key Characteristics
- Structure: Small and slow-growing (0.4 to 16 inches tall), often forming clusters (offsets). Instead of traditional ribs, they feature tubercles (nipple-shaped projections),
- Spines: Densely covered with radial spines (hair-like or straight), often with hooked central spines that can catch on clothing,
- Flowers: The most striking feature is a "crown" or ring of small, daisy-like flowers that bloom in spring or summer at the top of the plant. Colors include pink, red, yellow, white, or greenish-yellow.
- Fruit: After flowering, they produce small, club-shaped, often edible fruits that are generally red, magenta, or green, according to North Carolina Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox
Care Requirements
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light, and requires at least 4–6 hours of direct sun, advises Shape My Garden.
- Watering: Highly drought-tolerant; they need water only when the soil is completely dry, says www.succulentplant.in.
- Soil: Requires extremely fast-draining, porous potting mix.
