Key Characteristics:

  • Appearance: Forms dense, rounded clumps of cylindrical stems, 6–15 cm long, that are bright green, with short tubercles.
  • Spines: Lacks central spines; it has 15–30 radial spines that are short, harmless, yellow-to-brown, and often recurved.
  • Flowers: Small (approx. 1.5 cm) pale yellow, pinkish, or white flowers form a crown at the top of the stems in late winter to early summer.
  • Growth Pattern: Initially erect, then spreading and forming mats over time.
  • Cultivation: Thrives in full sun to light shade, requires well-drained soil (cactus mix), and is drought-tolerant, suited for USDA zones 9–11.
