Pachyphytum oviferum, or Moonstones, is a slow-growing Mexican succulent known for its exceptionally thick, egg-shaped, powdery leaves that range from pale blue-green to lavender-pink. This low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plant forms small, rosette-like clumps (~10cm wide) and thrives in bright, indirect light, well-draining soil, and is ideal for pots.
Key Characteristics and Description
- Leaves: The distinguishing feature is the "chubby," plump foliage that resembles stones, pebbles, or sugar almonds, with a powdery, white coating known as fina. Leaf colors can shift between silver-lilac, blush rose, and pale peach depending on sunlight and temperature, with brighter light enhancing the pink hues.
- Appearance: This species is a small, clump-forming plant, growing up to 4 inches tall and spreading up to 12 inches. The stems are initially erect but become pendant (drooping) over time, often making it suitable for hanging planters.
- Flowers: The plant blooms in winter to early spring, producing 1-foot long stalks that bear clusters of greenish-white to red-orange bell-shaped flowers.
- Habitat: It is native to the rocky cliffs of San Luis Potosí, Mexico, growing in full sun and rocky soils, adapting well to container gardening.
Care Tips
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light or full sun, though in extreme summer heat, partial shade is recommended to prevent sunburn.
- Watering: Requires very little water; it is best to allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot.
- Soil: Needs well-draining, mineral-based soil, such as a specialized cactus and succulent mix.
- Humidity/Temperature: Prefers dry environments and can handle a range of temperatures but should be protected from harsh frost.
Other Features
- Pests: Generally easy to maintain, but can be susceptible to mealybugs.
- Propagation: Can be propagated from leaf cuttings or by taking offsets from the main plant.
- Hardiness: It is not cold-hardy, so it is best kept indoors in areas with freezing temperatures
