The String of Pearls (Senecio rowleyanus) is a unique, trailing succulent featuring thin stems adorned with small, spherical, pea-shaped leaves that resemble beads or pearls. Native to South Africa, it is commonly grown in hanging baskets, creating a cascading, curtain-like effect. It thrives in bright, indirect light and requires infrequent watering due to its drought-tolerant nature.
Key Characteristics & Features:
- Appearance: The plant produces trailing, cascading stems with succulent, fleshy leaves adapted to store water. Each leaf has a small, translucent, window-like patch that aids in photosynthesis.
- Flowers: In summer, established plants produce small (½ inch) white, daisy-like flowers with red stamens and yellow anthers, known for a sweet, cinnamon-like fragrance.
- Growth Habit: It is a fast-growing, evergreen perennial that creeps along the soil surface, rooting at nodes to form a dense mat, or trailing downwards, up to 2–3 feet long.
- Cultivation: Thrives in well-draining succulent/cactus potting mix and requires bright indirect light, often favoring morning sun and afternoon shade.
- Toxicity: The sap of the String of Pearls is toxic to humans and pets, causing skin irritation in children and potential digestive issues if ingested.
Common Problems & Care:
- Watering: Overwatering causes root rot, which is the most common cause of death. Leaves will look shriveled if the plant is thirsty.
- Humidity/Temp: Prefers lower humidity and warm temperatures (above 70°F) in spring/summer, with cooler conditions in winter.
- Longevity: These plants typically have a lifespan of 3 to 5 years before they begin to decline, but are easily propagated via cuttings to start new, vigorous plants.
