The thimble cactus (Mammillaria vetula ssp. gracilis, formerly M. fragilis) is a small, slow-growing, clumping succulent native to Mexico, often grown indoors. It features clusters of cylindrical, lime-green stems covered in dense white spines, forming dense mats. This drought-tolerant cactus produces small cream-colored, pink, or yellow flowers, mostly in late winter to spring. 

Key Description and Care Details:

  • Size: Typically grows 3 to 6 inches tall and 4 to 5 inches wide.
  • Appearance: Comprised of small, thimble-shaped, fragile segments that detach easily but readily root to form new plants.
  • Light: Thrives in bright, direct light or full sun, but appreciates some afternoon shade in extreme heat.
  • Water: Needs infrequent watering (roughly every 2–4 weeks), only when the soil is completely dry.
  • Soil: Requires, fast-draining, gritty succulent or cactus potting mix.
  • Temperature: Not frost-hardy, with a minimum temperature requirement of roughly
